I do change the oil quite regularly. I have also noticed lot of sludge around the filler cap area. The car has approx 120,000 miles and drives great.

well if it's not visably leaking on teh ground then yoru probably just burning oil. To be honest this is normal for an engine with the miles your talking aout. If you really love the car you can concider haveing the engine rebuilt or just getting a new engine or car.

jsut to explain a littel fruther when the rings on teh piston become worn the oil will begin to seap into the chamber and burn off. You may concider using a high milage oil, or a thick oil.

also make sure your PCV valvue is working. Also make sure yoru not over filling the car with oil.

Its either leaking or burning it but it hasnt done many miles so does it do a lot of short running? If so take it for some hard drives it sounds like it isnt getting hot enough.
