ME, it encourages people to be lazy. the only people who should get help are single parents with more than two kids and an income below the poverty level.

no baby factories should not be rewarded, but some women are just too stupid and their children shouldn't have to suffer because of it. maybe they should be paid in food and clothes for their kids, that sounds better.

I believe in foodstamps and health care for the working poor. However, being on welfare perpetually is not a standard of life I would want to see anyone have. I believe in helping people who want to help themselves. A stereotype I need to address is about those who have disabilities. There are many people with mental and physical disabilities who have careers. It is ignorant to suggest that having a disability is a barrier to working and being productive.

I'd go for that. A gradual phase out, over say 3-4 years to give people a chance to find other resources.

I'm from New Hampshire. No income tax. No sales tax. No government handouts. The state pays for the roads and emergency services. The towns pay for the schools. Other than that, you're on your own. Live free or die.

Harsh. But I've slept homeless through a New England winter rather than move across the border into Mass and I take government handouts. And I came away stronger for it. It's not the job of the government to take care of people who don't want to put the effort into taking care of themselves.

There would be no need for welfare if absent parents did their full share of (50%) raising a child, and not leaving it to the custodial parent to do the entire job, and try to manage on a few measly dollars, if any at all.

That's a horrible thing to say. Do you want to let the less fortunate starve just because you don't want to pay a few measly dollars to help them and would rather spend it on a big-screen TV? For shame.

Only government welfare should be stopped. Welfare is a good thing, but must be controlled by individuals and non-profit organizations.

Conservatives believe in redistributing wealth just as much as liberals. We just believe in doing it through freedom (individual giving, charities, etc.) instead of having it forced upon us by an oppressive government (forcefully taking things that don't belong to you is called stealing).

What about people born so severly disabled that they will never be able to work? What about people to old to work and have no family left? Ever met someone with autism, cerebral palsy, or muscular dystrophy?

I guess if you were in charge we'd just take them out and beat them with a stick. Gosh, your heartless.

Welfare has it's place, but there should be time limitations, no additional credits for children born after you've started on it, and the abuse should be cracked down on with severity.

Me, sort of. I think that anyone receiving government assistance should have to work for it, no matter how limited their ability. I'd rather see programs like Habitat for Humanity - where the people who get the home have to help build it and then have to help build someone elses!

you can stop welfare when everyone in this country gets an equal opportunity. not just in the work force but in schools, politics, hell in everything. Maybe when the ghettos are destroyed too.
