he died in 1988 after suffering a heart attack during a pick up game. what's strange is that 10 years prior to his death he said "It's not like I'm gonna die in 10 years because of a heart attack"

I believe it was a heart attack. Pistol was amazing. Perhaps the best shooter ever to play the game.
