The best people would not lower their salaries for such a job......they are too selfish.......we all think the job is easy....but it is 24/7 and for 8 years quite often....even when on vacation.....and if you are making 5,000,000 or more a year, and work on 60-70 hours a week, why take a 92% pay cut, and work every hour of everyday.......it would be stupid

Well, there is this process by which we nominate candidates for the Office of the Presidency. There is State wide elections and caucus's in the states on different dates to elect Representatives to the Conventions of the Democrats, Greens, Republicans and American Independents. (Maybe other political parties also)
It takes so many delegate votes to nominate a Candidate of that Party to stand for election.
In recent history, professionals can tell you which candidate is going to win the nomination by the time of the third or fourth election or caucus.
This is where they come from. From a proscribed method laid out partly in the Constitution of the United States.

The best people know better than to get involved in poltics. I'd like to see a draft system to obtain the best of the best in business and law, and require them to do up to three terms in each office.

Electoral college.
We're actually voting for the electors who will choose the president.
And also because of the way the electoral college currently works, we're pretty much limited to the top two candidates, so we don't actually have a reasonable chance of picking someone else who might actual do the job better.
