I have a motherboard with a slot for an AGP card. I have heard that this is faster than the PCI slot but the best graphics cards available all seem to be PCI slot. Which of the two is best?
I want to use the motherboard to its full potential and money is no object as far as the graphics card goes.

PCI Express is the newest type of PCI card. I would definetely say that the PCI Express is better than the AGP.

The progression of discrete graphics interface technology goes something like this PCI -> AGP 2x/4x -> AGP 4x/8x -> PCI Express x16 -> PCI Express 2.0 Each has better bandwidth and provides more electrical power than the last. If your computer is only a year old, chances are it has PCI Express x16, don't worry about PCI Express 2.0, both the cards and the slots are backwards compatible to PCI Express x16. Check to see what your motherboard supports. There is a chance that it is still AGP. They still make some competant graphics cards for the AGP slot. Just buy what is supported, either way you should be doing better than onboard video.

all of the best cards ARE NOT on the PCI bus. in fact, all the bad, cheapo cars are. the best cards are on the PCI Express bus which IS NOT the same thing. AGP is much better than PCI and has some very good chips for it. the geforce 7800GTX is the best one out there right now. just make sure you find out what type of AGP slot your have. (there is 2x, 4x and 8x) most cards are compatible with two of the three types but not the other. just make sure your is compatible with your board.
Hope this helps!

it all depends on your bank balance,i use agp as i think it does a great job,i mean are you gonna sit there looking for a missing pixel or count the frame rates
my card a radeon 9250 256mb is capable of 50+ frames per second, and to be honest you wouldnt notice the different from 50 fps and 100fps
the real issue is do you want to play all the latest games,as most of these require pixel and shader model 3.0 ,this is a feature avalible on top end agp cards like the radeon x1600,but that is only £110
agp cards go up to x8 bandwidth, and pci-express start at x16,so a pci-express with 16 pixel pipelines will be twice as fast as a agp card with the same specs
in a technical sense ,pci-express is far superior, but realistically, agp is good enough for a average gamer and photographer
as you can see, this is a very hard question to answer,as both cards are good, but if i had to recommend one to you,it would have to be pci-express,basically because your system will be future proof and your games wont struggle at even high resolutions
good luck

Well lets forget PCI express, you can not put pci express on your motherboard,PCI express need new generation of motherboard which if I understood well you do not have.I would say the best solution for you right now is AGP graphic card.
Check Sapphire ati x1600pro 512 MB AGP
any nvidia 7800 AGP

Good luck

I think everyone else has already said it, but just to clarify:

If you have a PCI-E slot (PCI Express, different from regular PCI) then use that.

Otherwise, use your AGP slot.

Use PCI - assuming you can find graphics cards for PCI any more - as a last resort.

What u are talking abt is PCI-Express (or PCI-E).
This is faster then AGP, while normal PCI is slower then AGP.

Your motherboard has AGP and PCI (not PCI-E).
So u should get the AGP card.

Use AGP. It uses dedicated memory on the mother board. PCI will use system resources as PCI is a generic slot whereas AGP is dedicated.

Pci express x16 with Sli, the possibility to add a second identical card when your budget allows.
I have two GeForce 7800 GT 256Mb cards in mine, and with an Athlon 64 x2 3800 and Gbs of DDR400, I can tell you that the gaming experience is out of this world.
Any game I've tried at 1200x1000 with all the graphic options on full, I still get over 100fps....

Absolutely AGP is better. Any VGA provider, Provides it's adaptor on both AGP & PCI slots.

But something new has arriven, PCI Express. It rux.

You motherboard will work better on AGP
