My parents are retired and in their 90's... They live on social security and investments of about $70,000/per year
But this is probably what you are looking for:

http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/income/income04/statemhi.html
In 2004, mean income for all men was 39,032 for all women it’s 21,762
This link will show you income by education, age, sex, job, etc
http://pubdb3.census.gov/macro/032005/perinc/toc.htm
http://pubdb3.census.gov/macro/032005/faminc/new06_000.htm
for families in 2005:
The lowest 20% makes less then 24,780
The next 20% makes between 24,780 and 43,400
The middle 20% makes between 43,400 and 65,828
The next 20% makes between 65,828 and 100,000
The upper 20% makes above 100,000
The top 5% makes over 173,640
All of this information is broken down by person, household and family and by certain characteristics. It's interesting to look through.
