Do you know of some one who does that? Cutting themselves, hitting, etc? Have you ever done that? Why does that happen?

i've witnessed mentally ill patients mutilate and hit themselves. i know that it's said that people (not the mentally ill) who self mutilate are expressing a deep inner pain. i've heard that in some cases, the person is in so much distress and pain, they are emotionally numb. cutting and hurting themselves is a way to validate that they are still capable of feeling even though it is through self inflicting pain. i believe that for someone to create external marks on themselves, they are silently crying out for help. some may just chalk it up to the person being disturbed but i believe it is the person's expression of a pain so great, words wouldn't be able to describe how deep the river of pain runs.

There ARE different forms and different reasons. I used to be major depressive, pretty nasty. When things got to their worst, I wasn't feeling anything: emotionally or really physically. it was like I was just completely disconnected. Cutting was something I could feel physically. For awhile, whenever I felt like doing it, I'd go for a walk and smoke a cigarette (those were pretty much the only times I'd smoke; I was never "a smoker"). Since then, I've solved the bigger problem (or, at least kept it in check), so it's not really an issue any more.
I'll say that I found it interesting when a teacher friend of mine called it "the new anorexia".

Its a release of pain, a cry for help and all it results in is infection and pain and a trip to the asylum.
I'm sure everyone has their reasons. Most people don't talk about it until years later, some people brag about it as a self conscious cry for help and acceptance. Peer pressure can make people do things like that too. Some people have no other way of coping with internal pain and issue. Abuse and niglect at an early age effect this as well.

Usually the suffer from a mental disorder. BPD (borderline personality disorder) - self mutilation is a classic sign for this disorder.
I used to be a cutter. I did it to feel, I was so void of emotion, and when I became overwhelmed with an emotion I didnt know how to cope so I used to cut. Bleeding was feeling.
If someone is suffering from this they need to seek counseling and look into cognitive therapy. It can not be dealt with using drugs you must seek therapy.

Statistically, a high percentage of people who self-injure have suffered some form of abuse. It can also be a release of emotional pain--for someone who feels ill-equipped to deal with it in any other way.

my ex GF did things due to sexual abuse when she was young; cutting, skin excoriation, obsessive-compulsive behavior. It's really sad.
