Observe something very closely such as a rainbow (a real one not the one from your icon) and describe what you see. Describe how that makes you feel. Describe what you would do and see if YOU were the rainbow. Repeat this process for other things.

Notice and appreciate the smallest animals or plants. Watch what ants do. Think about WHY they do it.

Watch a small child play. Try to remember when you were very small what you wanted to play with.

Take objects like boxes, toothpicks, marshmellows whatever you have on hand. Build a structure from them. Think about what kind of people would live in the structure. Think about what they would do.

Take three colored (red, blue, yellow) pencils or crayons. Draw regular shapes on a paper (circles, ovals, triangles, squares). Make a variety of shapes. Turn the paper sideways. Continue to draw shapes.

Collect objects that make a noise when banged. Cooking pots hit with a wooden spoon. Spaghetti shaken in the box. A click ball point pen. A comb. A rubber band. Make rhythms with them.

These are all exercises. The imagination must be exercised just as the muscles must be exercised.

When you attempt to write a story you must be able to describe the setting and the people in detail. You must be able to describe a problem and how to solve it.

When you write a poem you must be able to describe something in a fanciful way. Make inanimate objects seem like living things. You must do this with rhyme, and meter.

I disagree with the person who said that a person is born with an imagination. People are born with curiosity, but imagination is developed.

Before you fall asleep, think about what you have done during the day, what you must do the following day and what you would like to do if you had unlimited time, money, effort, energy, super powers, the ability to fly, to go to other planets. Think about what animals or plants you might create if you were God. If the animal had fur would it be long or short, would it be all one color or camoflaged for security, etc.

You can develop your imagination. It just takes time and effort.

That's a "left brain" function. Most people only use predominately the left or the right and very few use both.
Reading promotes imagination. People watching is a good way to get imaginative. Go to a restaurant or bar and pick out a couple talking. Make up a story and even name them. More fun to discuss their plight with a friend.

Watch a movie that you find to be interesting, like harry potter or star wars, or even sweet home alablama, if that's your thing, then try to write a little 5 page story of what happens next. Just make it up and try to use the movie as a guide. Like if you liked star wars epidode 3, write a little 5 page story about princess lea growing up, maybe a few little scenes that happened to her at different ages.

Don't do it right away, think about it for a few days before you start writing. Good luck.

imagination is a form of pleasure, so to say ... in a very poetic sense.. but it is true. you cannot imagine anything if you are not interested, if you do not take pleasure in what you are doing.

so first, you have to like what you see, hear, experience or just think of, and then, to have the drive to react to that. this way you imagination feeds you with ideas (because you genuinely like the subject you're in) but you also do something with that

watch the new peter pan with Jeremy Sumpter. That will get your imagination "flying!" HA! Actually its quite good. Or...try day dreaming on purpose, think of one thing, then think of something was somehow linked to the first thing then think of something that was linked to the second thing...and pretty soon youll have no idea how you came to the imaginitive idea you came up with.
