Sometimes it doesn't... but don't believe that it can't.
I had a girlfriend once that cried every night for a month after having it done.... It hurt like a (might as well just write the exs myself) XXXXXXXXXXXX

It does hurt, but they do it so quickly that it's over as soon as you feel the pain. It's not too bad, my belly was the first thing I ever had pierced and at the time I thought the pain was a big deal. I've since had some other piercings that have hurt ALOT worse.

The first time I had it done I passed out, even though I didn't think it really hurt that bad.
The piercer says its normal, you get worked up and nervous about, and your body released a huge amount of adrenaline which can cause you to pass out if you don't have enough blood sugar to support it.
My piercer suggested for future piercing to sip on a mt dew for just a few minutes before and after.

It's not so much the piercing itself that hurts, it's the healing that's a pain. The piercing is just a strong pinch but healing, it usually gets a little infected and hurts when your pants rub on it.

It's not HORRIBLE! I've had mine done 3 times already. Each time I thought I'd "outgrown" it but I think it's really attractive.. It hurts (obviously) but the clamp that holds your skin to pull and pierce hurts more than the actual needle itself and this comes from a chicken sh!t when it comes to needles! It's a bit uncomfortable for a few days after too. And you have to clean it 'enough' but not 'too much'. Hope I helped!

Instead of getting the top of my bellybutton pierced, i got the bottom, and that wasnt bad, it just felt like a pinch and burning. Afterwards for a while it felt tight when i moved, and i caught it on my shirts a few times and that hurt like a *****. but ya, its not that bad. Just if you do get it done, make sure you keep it clean or you will get an infetion, and thats not fun. I had a bubble of pus that was just nasty. But good luck.

It doesn't really hurt, its a little pinch, then it's over with. I have 6 holes in my navel and they weren't bad. I've done hundreds of navel piercings and no one really feels pain or screams bloody murder. Trick is to relax, get as comfortable as you can and ask any questions before you get it done. Piercers only cause the pain that you ask them too. Keep it clean and happy piercing.

the clamp hurts the most. they said my skin was tough. the pulled it and yanked it. that hurt like hell. Then they shoved a hollow needle through to take a piece out for the barbell. what do you think? I think it hurt. Not so much that I regret it though:)

A lot like having a hemorhoid burst, I'm told, but more likely to become infected.
Don't let a little thing like that deter you, you're tough.
