n = number of nickels
(50-n) = number of dimes
.05 = value of a nickel
.10 = value of a dime
value of nickels x number of nickels + value of dimes x number of dimes = $3.50
Or written in math terms:
.05n + .10(50-n) = 3.50
Solve for n:
.05n + 5 - .10n = 3.50
-.05n = -1.50
n = 30 (number of nickels)
50-n = 20 (number of dimes)
30 nickels, 20 dimes

30 nickels = $1.50
20 dimes = $2.00
30 nickels + 20 dimes = 50 coins
$1.50 + $2.00 = $3.50

You have to make a chart of nickels and dimes and try out each combination. For example, if she has 50 nickels and no dimes, how much does she have? I she has 49 nickels and one dime, how much does she have? You keep working through the sequence until you arrive at the right amount--in this case $3.50.

30 nickels
20 dimes

n=nickels
d=dimes
.05n+.10d=3.50 (this equation shows that nickels are 5 cents, dimes are 10 cents and the combination of nickels and dimes totals $3.50)
n+d=50 (this equation shows that the total number of nickels and dimes is 50
so d=50-n
Substitute in the original equation.
.05n+.10(50-n)=3.50
.05n+5-.10n=3.50
-.05n=-1.5
n=30
d=50-n=50-30=20
