I use Spybot (free) and it works for me. You must download definitions frequently to get better results. Also, you can use Adware. It is very popular and a good choice too.

To avoid further infections try to set your Internet settings in Internet Explorer or your browser to a higher level.

Norton and AVG are virus engine (not designed for spywares) but if you use them that won't hurt at all.

It is best to have at least one antivirus program, one firewall and one or two antispyware programs. (Or three if you have a problem)

The best ones I have come across are...
1)Trend Micro Internet Security - Very good all round security. AV+F+AS (Pay Service)
2)eWido AntiMalware - Very good if in a sticky situation (as in lots of spyware) AS (60d trial - pay)
3)Ad-Aware (Lavasoft), very good in protecting against spyware. AS

Hope you understand, mail me if any trouble (ore want more advice)

you have never got too many spyware programs,i recommend at least 3 to cover all types of spyware, adware, and cookies
i wont list them as another answer has done it,but try installing windows defender(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en)
this is one of the best programs microsoft have brought out in ages and does a brilliant job at finding any nasties that may find their way on to your p.c
good luck
