and then the brakes locked up, I had to get it towed, im thinking it might be a bad tie-rod or bearings ..... Any suggestions of what might have possibly happened & guesstimate cost of repairs (at a shop) ??

It was definitely NOT the lug nutz. Also the brake lights came on & the whole wheel/rim was loose. 1998 Dodge Dakota Sport

It's a little hard to say without an inspection but it could be either a tie-rod, ball joint or wheel bearing. Cost could be all over the map, but let's say $150 for the part and $200 for the labor, assuming there is no other damage. You will need a front-end alignment after a failure like this.

Wheel bearing failure sounds like... other tires rotate?

The brake line only thing holding tire onto car? Wheel bearing.

Failed tire rod the tire would cause tire fall over...
but tire would still rotate(picked up off ground that is)
it'd be on the FLAT side otherwise!

No damage to other parts just replacement of bearings...
IF extremely lucky...

other involvement can cause price to head upwards rapidly.

Other possibility is FWD cv joint failure- $$$$

Or you drove the brakes past the rivets which hold the pad /shoe in place and that fell off lodged in a spot/ or calipers expanded into rim and 'locked tire'. Price way more than if you had replaced pads when the nuisance tabs were squeeling when you were braking...

If it was a tie rod about 75.00

But it sounds like a Ball Joint which maybe around 100.00
this is with the labor cost

Usually if it was a bearing or tie rod going bad it would of gave you a sign before falling off

A ball joint may fall off without any sign

If it was a bearing for which you said the wheel was loose
This could cost you about 250.00 if it didn't hurt the spindle..

I'd say your lug nuts were loose, except for the brakes locking up. That says bearings. Depending on the damage done, you're looking at between $200 and $500, and that doesn't count the tow bill.

That's why you fix things that make "clunking noises" on your front end! It is most likely a tie rod. It all depends on how much damage you did by ignoring your car's maintenance.

I honestly do not know what could have caused that, however if it is your tie-rods it will probably cost around 150 dollars to get fixed. I just had mine replaced last week, that's how I know that.

good luck =)

you didn't say whether it had lost its lug nut,,or what,,at this point it could be anything,,you also did not give what type of vehicle,,or anything,,anyone who answers this question cannot give you an accurate answer on it,,because there,s not enough information here to work with.
