Different reasons for different people. Some women feel it's a good comrpomise between keeping their own identity and accomodating the "tradition". There's no objective reason for either keeping your own name, hyphenating, or changing it altogether; it all depends on the personal perception. Pesonally, I like my name, and would never change it; it reflects my heritage, and I'm attached to it. Others feel just as strongly about becoming a "part" of their husband, and are changing their name to reflect it. Then, there are the all kinds of "in-betweens"; it really is a matter of personal preference.

I hyphenated my last name because, I had a child from a previous marriage and I didn't want her to be the only one in the home with that last name.

In addition, we hyphenated her last name to include my husbands, which she wanted since he has been in her life since she was 1 year old; she is now 12.

Our children that my husband and I have together have hyphenated last names as well.

Furthermore, I liked my last name.

Why might want to all and sundry favor to offer up area of their self id? Why shouldn't you're taking her very last call once you get married..it truly is carried out right here and in different cultures. no matter if it truly is a feminist element, it truly is surely a professional element. perchance the staggering answer might want to be for both to hyphenate the perfect call...a lot less confusion, extraordinarily with divorced people.

Because she values who she is as an individual and you shouldn't have to lose your identity to be married. My cousin (a man) even took on his wife's last name too as a hyphen.....because he saw it as the two of them coming together as equals. I agree with that accept they both have long difficult to pronounce names ;)

Because she wants to screw her kids for the rest of their lives. I got stuck with 2 long last names that I have to sign on everything. Just waiting for the ring to have a name change.

In some cases, women who do not want the family name to die out often do this. It is so their children will carry the name of both sides of the family.

I love who I am .. and I am happy to add my husband into that equation, but NOT at the expense of losing myself. During a horrible marriage, having my identity saved my self esteem. I have a heritage that I am very proud of! My name is not negotiable. I may one day add to it, but never will I surrender it!

Their last name my be something unique, and the want to hold onto that individuality. If they were marrying someone with a common lastname (ex. Smith), it would give even more reason to hold on to their name.

I think it varies, from women's liberation to simple name recognition. Politicians may have made their career name while single, but also want to show that they are married, so they use both names. I think there are a variety of "whys" to this.

Perhaps all of her professional contacts know her by her maiden name and she wants to make sure she is recognized.

What's such a big deal even if she wanted to keep her maiden name only?
