I have at least 3 old macintosh computers, 2 of which are not even internet capable, the other one is 8 years old! What can I do with them? I know donate the, but every place says that they can't use computers that old. Any ideas, other than throw them out in the garbage, which is not good.

New York City has a program where you can drop them off at designated places on designated days. It's a new thing and the days are very infrequent. You didn't say you were in the City but maybe this information on electronics recycling can lead you somewhere good. Who knows maybe you will even be in the city with your old Macs this fall.

Actually, in most states you cannot even throw out a computer in the normal trash - you have to dispose of it as hazardous waste at a trash/recycling center for an extra fee. There's lead and mercury in computer components that shouldn't go into the ground with normal trash.

You've probably already checked out schools and libraries, but have you tried churches, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4H, or the YMCA? Suggest taking them apart as part of an activity rather than using them. If you know any neighborhood kids who're mechanically inclined, give the computers to them. I've heard of local clubs smashing computers as a fund raiser too. Will a local Goodwill or Salvation Army will take them?

Good luck!

Do not throw them out...it is illegal and terrible for the environment. Look for a computer recycling place near you...most will even come and pick it up at your door.
