What, like 555-5555 kind of thing? I used to live near a train station, and my phone number was only one digit different from the station. I used to get lots of phone calls from confused travellers. My number was less busy because I wasn't running the train station (but I might as well have been.)

If the wrong number were busy, then how would you know it was a wrong number?

As a telephone operator, I phoned a number given me and it had been given to me wrongly (transposing of number). The woman who answered was 'most INDIGNANT' that I had dared phone her, especially as her number was 'ex-directory' and she DEMANDED to know how I had got her number!

No explanation i could come up with would satisfy her method of thinking.

Trusting your Q is now A.....!

what happens is, you dial the right number and the system thinks, aw, that number's busy, you won't get through! Then it notices the other number is not busy and it thinks, aw, no-one's calling them, I'll put you through to them!
