Yes, they are self consious. Some people would find it disturbing and or disgusting to see an overweight person in a swimsuit, but I think that they should be comfortable with their body and just wear whatever.

American society and media has taught most american women that we should be shamed by our bodies, and not only are they content with making women feel like crap, but now men are being targeted. When you look at the TV or magazines you are bombarded by a specific body type, if you don't meet that ideal, whether you're fat or skinny, then you aren't attractive.
A lot of people feel uncomfortable with their bods out there, some display it by hiding it under clothing that's too big, and some wear "sexy" clothes and loudly proclaim they're okay with who they are. Someone who is truly comfortable in their skin all the time is a great rarity.
So to answer your question, yes, the probably are trying to hide their body. On the other hand, maybe they have very sensitive skin and are trying to keep from exposing it all to the sun.

Not all fat people wear big t's to go swimming. Some bigger people are okay with the fact that they are not a size 2. and some are self conscious, yes even with friends, especially if they are being hounded by people as to why they wear big tshirts.
I say leave it alone. Let them be and wear what they want. All you should worry about is the friendship, not what she wears to get in the water!!!

Im not fat and I wear a tshirt to go swimming too...I do it because Im self-conscious. I think they would be too. They might be afraid of being teased and talked about because they are fat and over weight

Probably self concious...have you read some of the rude things on here that people call them & say about them?
Did you have to say 'fat people' in your question? Could you have said overweight, or larger, or something?
That could be a major contributor, other peoples opinions they can't keep to themselves!

I'm guessing that yes, even with friends, they are probably self conscious about their weight.

well reverse it why do you think skinny ppl wear skimpy a**clothes cause they think they are hot ... in america today if you arent skinny your labeled as ugly so of course they feel insecure ..which is wrong and sad that they have to feel that way and wear big shirts without someone making fun of them.
