IT worked out that way because someone within range of your WIFI adaptor has an unsecured connection. This mean that anyone within that range can pick up and use this as an outbound connection.
On the other hand had they had the forethought to secure thier network you would still see it, but you would be prompted for a password in order to actually use it and get internet access. Lucky you

Your notebook has a wireless card in it. It automatically searches for a signal when you turn your computer on. You are picking a signal from some one near you that has a router. As long as you remain in range of that router you will be able to access the interenet unless they make their network secure. In that case, if no other wireless is available you will need to set up your own router. Please note that if more than one person is using the signal you are picking up, your internet will be slow.

Yeah assuming you are running windows XP the wireless zero configuration service is probably allowing you to connect to an unsecured wireless connection (like there's a secure one?) of someone in your general area... it runs via waves running at 2.4GHz .. the same freq. as most other appliances, being an unrestricted band and all.

You need to connect to an "access point". If you have internet access in your house, you can buy an access point called a wireless router. Your computer will automatically search for access points in range. You must be using your neighbors or something.
