1) China can no longer be considered Third World. She has the fastest growing economy, a military juggernaut and among the largest importers of raw materials.

2) Russia, has had her problems since the fall of the USSR. But she is not Third World either. The very fact that she is a member of the Group of 8, should dispel this notion.

3) Saudi Arabia, is the largest producer/supplier of oil in the world. Her wealth has increased with the rising prices of oil. Saudi Arabia was never Third World and I doubt she'll ever slide down there.

4) Mexico, whilst poorer than many European nations and lagging behind the US and Canada in N. America, is still better off than most Central and S.American nations. So Third World is out, maybe 2nd World.

5) That leaves Iran. After the Saudis, they have the next largest reserves of oil. Despite an embargo on them by Western nations, since the fall of the Shah, they have coped and the Ayatollahs remain very much in control. Whilst their citizens are not exactly living cushy lives, they are neither struggling nor do they experience extreme hardship or poverty.
Again, Third World description is out.

The term "third world" is no longer the correct term, its now "developing countries". The term "third world" comes from the Cold War to distinguish those nations that were neither aligned with the West -NATO- nor with the East - Communist. Today it can also include capitalist and communists and the very rich Saudi Arabia and the very poor Mali. If you look at their GNI, then none of these countries have low enough GNI to be on the list, its countries like Timor-Leste, Somalia, Democratic Republic of the Congo. If you look at the countries in terms of their Human Development the same countries i listed above are said again. If you look at countries in terms of their Press Freedom you find Saudi Arabia, China, Iran. But in terms of being developing, they are not 'third world'

Actually, I would consider them more 2nd world. 3rd world would be closer to most African countries, too poor to feed most of their population. These countries can feed a lot of their population. Also, industrial might or wealth is a consideration to define these countries. They generally have one or both. I do not know if this a very good answer.
