Charlton and West Ham have both been improving their sides and would hope to have a good run of results to qualify for Europe. Are they likely to be competing for a single place?

And what do you reckon the result is likely to be?

No Fred not a six pointer, certainly not on opening day.

However, I understand your point. This game is important, especially for the direction both teams will take.

Charlton begin life without Alan Curbishley, who made his mark in getting them play well, when they were trying to become a regular premiership side.
One feature of Charlton then, was always to start brightly to a season, thus ensuring survival. This is true, because they usually fade away in the middle and latter stages. All those early season points save them from a relegation scrap heap, allowing them to focus even on European slots.

Alan Pardew's Hammers were tipped for the drop last term, but they confounded the experts and reached the Cup Final even.

Defeat for any team, could have a demoralising effect for the early stages, moreso for Charlton, as West Ham still have the UEFA Cup to look forward to.

I forsee at least a draw for the Addicks. They may even go one better!

West Ham United's good home form will see them start this season on a high note. Ian Dowie's first game in charge as Charlton Athletic manager will start on a losing note.

West Ham United to win this London derby, 2-1.

I think Charlton are vastly improved, with two very good forwards. I wouldn't be surprised to see them 7th or 8th at the end of the season.

Not at this early stage, it is not a six pointers, both mid tables team hoping to improve on the performance.

I see a draw, both teams can play well but it's the start of the season and the players need to get back into that match mindset so I see it going at a slower pace than it would do.
