traction bars, they are on both sides and connect around the rear portion of the cab area on a cross frame. They extend back to the rear axle and are bolted on. It looks factory original, but I have never seen anything like this from the factory. Is this some type of strengthing for the frame, or are they ladders bars?

GearHead has it right. They are factory control arms. The little pick-up didn't come with leaf springs on the rear, but coil springs. Those control arms are what allow the axle assembly to move with the road conditions. If you look higher under the bed, you will see an upper control arm as well.

Sure sounds like ladder bars to me!!!!! It doesn't have coil springs does it? I have an old Apache I could look at, but that is several miles away!
