Do what you can to make your home safe from intruders. If you have a cell phone. Keep it on the charger beside you. Consider having a weapon.

You are also vulnerable when you are outside your home. Learn to be vigilant.

You should not be obsessively concerned with noises around you. When you jump at noises this may indicate a hyper "startle response". Have you been in a dangerous situation lately that may predispose you to post traumatic stress syndrome? If the problem interferes with your sleep or your ability to relax at home you should let your physician know.

It depends on the circumstances and age, those under 5 need constant supervision even at home, as they get older and more mature they can be left alone longer, as when you go next door or across the street. Those over 14 can normally be left alone for up to a day at home, less at a hotel.. A lot depends on the maturity of the child and the security of the place where they are left. A hotel is considered safe as home and when a child is asleep upstairs at home you don't check all that often. You or I would not have gone out to eat even if able to check the child every 30 minutes, but they thought it would be sufficient, they thought they were being responsible. They made a mistake, which no one can disagree with, but are you perfect and without mistakes? If the McCanns thought the place they were staying was as secure as their home they were checking often enough. There have been children kidnapped from their beds in their homes, while the parents were in the home. Would you say that those parents were unfit because they didn't check their children every 30 minutes in their own homes? It is possible that the kidnapper would wait and observe the parents of his target, hoping they would go to sleep, have drinks and music on a balcony, walk to the beach and back, anything that would provide a window of opportunity. So in this case he may have watched the girl be checked every 30 minutes and made his move. The parents made an error of judgement, but they could have been asleep in the next room and still had it happen. The truly guilty person is the kidnapper, so why not attack him instead of the suffering parents? Do you think they are enjoying all this, that they are really that shallow? I doubt they are. atavacron - There are people who live on farms where they may both be 100 yards from their house while the children are asleep inside and they have full view of the house. When someone walks in takes one of their children and runs away who is guilty of a crime? Are they bad parents for being out in the field? What if the parents are out in the backyard by the pool and the children upstairs when someone walks in the front door and steals a child? What if they are asleep too in their bedroom at the other end of the house? The kidnapper is 100% at fault in any kidnapping. The criminal is always at fault, no matter how easy the victim makes the crime. If someone is known to carry cash and not lock his front door the criminal who walks in to take the cash is still 100% guilty of theft. The victim is never guilty, except of stupidity.

Yes and more now that alot is going on in the world.People are loosing their minds. To make myself feel better,I check all the windows, bolt the door, andmake sure that if something happens I have a get away plan.It also helps that my husband is aSecurity gaurd, so I have a gun in the house and before I'm alone, I make sure I know wher it is and it's loaded.I know how to use it.I never touch it unless we are at the range.Cause it's good to know what it feels like if you have to use it.But REMEMBER GUNS ARE NOT TOYS ,but you have a right to defend yourself. If you don't have a gun,Find a BIG rock that fits your hand, and keep it by the door.If you can get to the rock it could save your life.
Ihave one at my door handy.I get scared cause I have a ghost in my house.A kid cause he hide things all the time.Try to keep a calm mind don't let it play tricks on you.if you do an inisent person may get hurt.

don't be scared when your scared you tend to make mistakes.

Buy yourself or ask ur parents for a guard dog like a german shepherd or a golden retriever or like the ones described above (it can keep u accompanied, n besides improve ur life), try to keep yourself busy....n also, don't watch too many horror movies if u r the faint-hearted type of person...it only makes it scarier! or better yet, call ur friends over if ur parents approve.

Get a dog. As long as the dog is not deaf, there is no need to worry until they start barking like mad at night. Plus the sound of barking is intimidating to whoever is outside the house.

Turn on a radio or TV so you have other sounds going on, and you won't feel so scared or alone.
