I want to live where dragonflygurl lives. $3 an hour? Where I live, we pay $5 an hour for one child and $7 an hour for two children. Find out from someone in your area what the going rate is where you live.
If you want to be called back, don't leave a mess for the parents when they get home. If the kids are old enough, have them help you clean up. Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink.
I liked the idea of the person who said to bring a library book with you that the kids may not have read before. That would impress me if a sitter did that.
Have fun with the kids. Little ones just like to play and run around. I have a daughter who will be 3 in October and she loves to pretend play. Sometimes we're animals and she chooses the kind of animals. Sometimes we're princesses. She loves to play tag or hide and seek.
I agree with the comment about not talking on the phone. Don't let the TV be their babysitter. If the parents say, it's OK for them to watch one video, then that's fine but do something else, too.

Don't charge more than $3 an hour. As a babysitter myself, have a fun bag with you. You know fun stuff for the kids to do like a new game, coloring books, cards, and I always have a treat for the kids. Make sure you get in good with the parents and prove to them you are trust worthy. Have the parents tell you what there kids can and can't eat or do. Know bed times, nap times etc.
Most of all have fun with the kids so they will enjoy being with a babysitter. Good Luck!

Being a great babysitter is having fun. Kids like to be able to do things that there parents don't let them do. Tell them that you will let um stay up a little later and stuff. (But put them to bed at the reg time if they cant tell time) Turn on the radio and have a big dance party. If your babysitting girls have a fashion show and have them put some makeup on. Theres all kids of stuff I could go on and on all day. I babysat for many many years. Its ALOT of responsibility but very rewarding! Babysitters do not get paid much so I would start at like $7 and hour Nothing more. I will be surprised if you get that. Have fun and good luck!

First and foremost, show them lots of love!!!Care for them as if they were your own.Show them that they are important and TELL them that they are special and unique, and precious and definitely a gift that is better than anything that anyone could ever give you. Have fun with them.Go to the park, slide down the slides with them, this is like a chance for you to be a kid again as well. Be their friend but also let them know who is in charge in a gentle yet affirming way.Good snacks and healthy meals and the odd treat. Reward them when they do well and have been good. Make sure you send them home happy a bit tired so that they will sleep for the parents but not to tired that they are whinny when they get back to mom and dad. The parents will appreciate this very much and request your services more often. Keep in mind that child care is expensive and most parents that are working don't want to be working just so they can pay the babysitter.Keep your prices modest but also allow for whether you have to provide the food and snacks or if the parents will be sending it with the children. Most of all ... Have FUN and show lots of LOVE !!!!

if you are a certified babysitter then I am mortified that someone told you they paid 12 a day per kid. most babysitters are paid on average anywhere between 7 to 9 $ an hour. play with the children and make sure the house isn't a disaster and kids are clean and dishes put away!! play and have fun.

Make sure you arrive on time. Ask about any special instructions (snacks, diet restrictions, allergies, bed time, etc.) Make sure the parents leave emergency numbers. Bring activities suitable for the child's age: puzzles, coloring books, etc. Ask parents if you can arrive a little early to ease the child(ren) into your presence. Don't take liberties in someone else's home. Respect the telephone, you are babysitting not there to socialize. Keep the children under your supervision at all times.
As for fees, discuss this with the people who certified you. They should know what the going rates are for your area. Notify the parents before hand of what you charge.
Good luck.

1. Show your interest in the kids when they interview you. Ask what the kids's names are, what are their hobbies, what do the parents prefer you to do if they get naughty, stuff like that. Ask to meet the kids, and show that you like them.
2. Play with the kids. Kids prefer babysitters who play with them instead of allowing them to watch TV all the time. Play board games, tag, hide-and-seek, adventure games, etc.
3. Talk to the kids. Get to know them and what they like. Show that you're interested in them and they will really like you.
4. Get them a little gift once in a while or for their birthdays.
5. Spend all your attention on the kids while you are babysitting. No phone calls or text messages unless they are asleep.
6. Just have fun!

ok here are some tips for babysitting
you are there to supervise and care for the children
discipline is up to the parents... even when they are not there..
instead learn how to distract the kids you are babysitting by having lots of fun stuff to do.
if they start doing something that is not friendly, polite, or is downright naughty don;t scold them instead pick them up, if you can and take them to different part of the house and start doing a fun activity...
have lots of fun things to do and make yourself a babysitting case or bag... fill it with:
a special toy from when you were little
bright fun toys different to what the kids have
some really good storybooks with bright pitures
some fun kids musi tapes/cd's
a dvd or video or two suitable to the kids age group
If the kids are inquisitive you could perhpas plan to bake some goodies with them (be really careful in the kithen and do clean up afterwards.)
research some fun rhymes and games you can teach the kids... make a book of all the fun stuff you find..
charge appropriately... if the parents are not real well off you an give them a bit of a discount but don't rip yourself off..

Follow through... if you tell them no, then mean no. (But dont be a hardass)... if they are being bad, give them a chance... tell them if you do it again then youre going to have to stand in the corner (or whatever is appropriate) and then follow through. Let them stay up no later than 30 minutes longer than their bedtime... they'll like you for this and the parents wont get mad.
As far as charging... i think it depends on where you live, and maybe how many kids and how old they are-- and maybe even how old you are..... I would think no less than $5/hour and no more than $10.
Good luck.

Kids always think it's neat if you bring something new for them to do while you're there - whether it is a game to play or even just coloring books and crayons. They will enjoy something different. Make sure your focus is on the kids, not something else (phone, TV,etc). Don't believe everything the kids tell you - they will try to see how much they can get away with.
