Tom Hanks, hands down. Mel Gibson is prettier, but Tom Hanks can do a greater variety of roles - and much more believably. Mel Gibson does action better, but you asked who was the better ACTOR.

An online search revealed the poll of:

WHICH MOVIE STAR IS #1 ...?
...

Men:
Tom Hanks

Women:
Tom Hanks

People aged 18-29:
Johnny Depp
...

Republicans:
Mel Gibson

Democrats:
Tom Hanks

Anyways, I didn't need to do a search that would reveal Tom Hanks a better actor. He also knows Public Relations... *s*

Tom Hanks by far. He is better in every genre. But Mel Gibson isn't a bad actor, he's just not as good as Tom Hanks.

MEL GIBSON! I don't know why, but Tom Hanks is one of those people that I just want to hit... That makes me sound really mean. Maybe it's 'cause I've not liked some of the characters that he's played. I suppose he's probably considered a better actor, but I prefer Mel Gibson's films and characters everytime. I can't believe Hanks was chosed to play Robert Langdon in the Da Vinci Code film... not at all who I'd have chosen, I have to say... On the other hand, they chose Paul Bettany to play Silas, so they obviously know what they're doing! ;P

Tom Hanks definately...he's strong in all the roles he plays, comedic or serious, and does a good job of combining both elements if necessary.
Mel Gibson is fine, though not nearly as versatile and not as engaging...I don't find I feel the same connection to the characters he plays as I do to the characters Tom Hanks plays.
Plus, Tom Hanks went to my high school so I have to be a bit biased.

Tom Hanks. Academy Awards aren't necessarily a gauge, but the fact that Hanks won two Best Actor oscars for terrific performances (Philadelphia and Forest Gump), and probably could have won a third for one of his other nominated performances, says a lot. He remains the Great American Actor of his generation, much like Jimmy Stewart - the link between DeNiro and Johnny Depp/Sean Penn.

I give Mel Gibson a lot of credit - Braveheart is a terrific performance, as are underrated movies like Tim, Man with no Face, and Galipoli. Top it off with Max, one of the most iconic figures in cinema. I also admire him for tackling something like Hamlet (and doing a very good job). But ultimately, it will be Gibson's work as a director and producer (Passion and Braveheart) that he deserves our admiration.
