Learn everyone's names...teachers, students, other support staff, principals
Be available whenever possible during the day to run errands, or copies or whatever
Be aware of the students (and teacher)
Be kind and caring
Be wary (both teachers and students can be vindictive)

Nowadays you can do a course for learning assistants. See if you can get a day release course through your work. Other than that, ask the teacher exactly what is expected of you. Within a few weeks you should be well into the job and know exactly what you're doing. Have fun - working with children is brilliant fun and the most rewarding work you can do.

Depending on what kinda of school (primary, secondary, post-secondary) different things are necessary. HOWEVER here are couple things to do no matter what age:

*Gain trust of the students-find out the qualities in their regular teacher that the students like/dislike. Observe their response to some of the things their regular teacher does.

*Be enthusiastic-I hate teachers who act like they'd rather be run over my an 18-wheeler than be in the classroom with me! If a teacher acts like they want to be there, its gonna make me (as a student) want to be there!

I hope this helps!

Find some time to meet with the teacher or teachers you work with regularly. Get to know them. Show students that you are interested in them as individual people. Good luck!

just follow the teachers lead.
Our school treats the aides just like regular teachers. They don't call them " aides ".
Schools can't function w/o teacher's aides !
Good for you in becoming a " teacher "

Make sure you know each students name, and make that connection be yourself and they will be open to you
