Look and see if there is an Energy Guide sticker on it. That should have a date on it.

Why would anyone need a heater to heat HOT water anyway?

Look for a date on it or the gas valve or look it up on the Internet call manufacture ask the previous owners ,abstract,manuals you got with the house,sticker of who mite of installed it. Why do you ask?

find the brand name,check with the manufacturer with the serial no.they should be able to tell you

could be a 1981 or 2002. doesn't matter because they last longer with small familys and shorter with big ones. they leak, you replace them.
