Molting is when an older layer of skin (or feathers) wilts, and falls off the body revealing a new set of skin or feathers.

Snakes and lizards molt also.

It looses it's feathers...usually not all at once, so they are naked, but it sometimes looks that way! Feathers everywhere!
The parakeets are the worst!
If they are petable birds, make sure you help with pin feathers. If you pet them & brush the feathers backwards, it helps break up the material that comes over the feathers. Most birds like this...

Basically the same as shedding. Getting rid of the old feathers to make way for new growth.
