Rainbow forms because of refraction of sun light through water particles. The best way I know to create a simply rainbow is to spray water mist under the sunlight and look for a rainbow at different angles.

The rainbow effect can be observed whenever there are water drops in the air and sunlight shining from behind the observer at a low altitude or angle. The most spectacular rainbow displays when half of the sky is still dark with draining clouds and the observer is at a spot with clear sky overhead. The rainbow effect is also commonly seen near waterfalls or fountains. Rainbow fringes can sometimes be seen at the edges of backlit clouds and as vertical bands in distant rain or virga. The effect can also be artificially created by dispersing water droplets into the air during a sunny day.

You need 3 things -

1 enough water drops in the air

2 sun light shining on the water drops

3 you, the observer, needs to be in the correct position so that you see those water drops, illuminated by sunlight, somewhere along an arc 42 degrees around the anti solar point

So to make a rainbow on a sunny day, go outside with a garden hose with a nozzel which makes a fine spray. Find the anti solar point, which is the shadow of your head. 42 degrees is about 2 widths of your streched out hand (tip of thumb to tip of little finger) at arms length. Measure out this distance from the shadow of your head and imagine a cirlce around this point of this radius. Now spray the water somewhere on this circle and you will see a rainbow!!

Further out from this you will second a fainter second rainbow which is called the secondary bow and it is caused by light which reflected twice inside the water/rain drops!

You need good old fashioned sunshine and water.

Spray a hose through the air at different angles during a sunny day - eventually you should see a rainbow in the water.

The best time to see one naturally is immediately after a very quick storm, when the sun comes out right afterwards.

make it rain and then make sure the sun comes out after. Rainbows are a reflection or a refraction which is the bending of light . This happens because light travels a different speeds in different mediums. Different color of light have different frequencies which cause them to travel at different speeds when they move through matter. a color that travels more slowly in glass will bend more sharply when it passes from air to glass. Dorps of rainwater can refract and disperse light in the same basic way as a prism. When white sunlight hits a collection of raindrops at a low angle you can see red orange yellow green blue indigo violet. So whwn the light passes from air into a drop of water the colors of light slow down to different speeds depeding on thier frequiences and you only see one color from each raindrop. Each of the colors that you see all depend on the level that the raindrops are at to your sight of vision. . If you were above the rain you would see a complete circle and on the ground you see an arc. When you see a double rainbow its because instead of the light passing through the raindrop once it is reflected twice. I hope this makes sence
