how can sound exist if there is nobody around to hear it

Yes...it's all about "transmitting" and "receiving".

Consider this...when a tree falls, whether or not there is anyone within hearing distance, it makes "noise"...it produces and sends out "sound waves"....it is a "TRANSMITTER".

A human being, or an animal for that matter, has ears, "receptors", capable of "receiving"...therefore, is a "RECEIVER".

So our ears are "receivers" and when the tree falls and makes noise our ears receive that noise and those sound waves act upon our eardrums to tell our brain that a noise has been made (AND, from which direction the noise comes from).

Therefore, though no one may be available to "receive" the sound waves produced by the falling tree, this does NOT mean that NO sound was made...there simply was no "receiver" (ear) within range (hearing distance) of the noise.

For the 1,oooth time. Yes it makes a sound. Nobody can hear it.
But somebody can hear it. The Forest Animals. Okay?

Some sounds are not for human ears to hear. One may as well ask if a bat squeaks in a cage in a laboratory, and is surrounded by a dozen scientists, and it makes a sound too high pitched for human ears to hear, does that bat make a sound.

Course it does. The fact that we can't hear it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It would be the height of human hubris to assume that just because we can't see or feel it that it can't exist.

The tree does make a sound. Just because the sound isn't receptive to those too far to hear it does not remove the fact that sound waves are created.

It does and the sound is saved on a disk which is then stored with the evil witch to be replayed whenever a deaf and dumb tree falls (those are the ones that don't make sound btw).

Of course it does! The noise is caused by the impact of the tree hitting the ground - there is still impact and therefore noise, even if you personally are not there to hear it. Don't forget plenty of other creatures in the vicinity will!

Sound is simply the vibration of air molecules which our ears pick up and our brains interpret and identify. With no one around, the tree would still produce the air vibrations, and thus sound, however with no one around to interpret the sound there'd be noone to identify the sound as a tree falling.

Sound waves travel on forever, so yes, it does....but that doesn't mean that anyone heard it hit the ground. I've never truly understood this question, except to think that it's a perception inquiry about reality as we think it is. Interesting concept, but almost beyond my limited intelligence.

No just a whisper but if it is in a forest then surely the animals will hear it.

Considering noise cannot exist independently of ears, no. Only the vibes in the air exist, no actual sound can exist without somebody hearing it.
