Generally just cleaning the rubbish out of the internet files will have a big impact, however to get the best out of the system you will need the help of software. System Mechanic will do all this and more to improve your system. Its not free but you can download the trial for 30 days and at least it will improve now. Check it out here http://www.iolo.com/sm/ Good Luck ::O)

ok tim, even if you have a laptop,8 minutes is still a long time for a operating system to load ..lets sort this out
stage 1) run anti-virus
stage 2) run anti-spyware,try spybot to be sure(http://www.safer-networking.org/) and also ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
stage 3) go to run...type msconfig > start up tab>deselect all programs you dont want to start up,this dosent stop the programs ,just the start up items
stage 4) download ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/)this is a brilliant all round cleaner, its like your pc having its own little housekeeper
stage 5) do a system defrag ,go start>programs>accesories>ssystem tools>disk defragment
stage 6) look in add/remove programs...anything you dont use or can do without, remove ,also dont use more than 1 toolbar,1 anti-virus ,2 antispyware, and stick to windows firewall ,other firewalls tend to slow down your laptop
once you have done this ,restart to test the improvement, and if ok set a restore point in system restore
this will give you a good restore point if your laptop slows down again
good luck

Disk defragment, disk cleanup. Both native windows utils

You should also be installing and running Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware regularly. If that doesn't work I suggest a disk format and clean install
