I have done that a lot, taken road trips where I have never been. I always allow for gas stops but since I don't know exactly where the gas stations are, I just stop when I get down to a quarter of a tank. It always seems to work for me.

I also allow for extra time to stop if I see something interesting.

I have done 3 road trips in the US and 1 in Australia and never found getting gas a problem. Like a previous answer, when it gets to third/quarter full, stop at the next gas station and fill it right up. If you have a modern car it should do at least 250-300 miles on a full tank, if not more, so just bear that in mind when planning you rest/overnight stops. Have a great trip.

Difficult question - for a start you do not state from where you wish to begin your journey nor your end destination. Gas in the form of butane is not very widely available yet, so you are better sticking to petrol (benzine) or diesel.

Join AAA. Their maps have gas stations on them.

You can go to mapquest.com and get a map that has directions to the place your going and shows where gas stations are.

you are making it too hard. when you pass a gas station, look at your gas gauge. if you need gas, stop. if not, keep driving.
