Ridden in one once. They typically charge by the mile, not by the time. A Google search turned up that Yellow Cab posts their prices online.

Can't quite answer your question about safety as I am a guy and a fairly large one at that. But a reputable cab company ought to be safe. Usually it's the cabbies who are more afraid of crime than their passengers (In Houston, I wouldn't be surprised if the driver is packing.)

Taxi costs vary by location, destination and company.
For a 30 minute cab ride, estimate about $100 to be safe.
Ask the company to send a female driver if that makes you feel better. I have ridden cabs in Vegas for 30-45 mins at a time alone with a male cab driver and never felt worried. Take your cell phone with you, just in case.
Good luck and don't forget to tip him / her !

Used to drive one. Fares are generallly based on time and distance and most start around $1.50 per mile or so for a "local" ride. So a typical 30 minute ride at highway speeds would run around $45.00 or so.
Taxi passengers are much more safe than taxi drivers. I was held up several times, stabbed twice and shot once. Needless to say, I found other work.

Call and ask. It cost me about $45 to go to the airport before, which took about 30 minutes, but that was a long time ago. It would be way more now. But it was cheaper than leaving my car there.

Try negotiating a flat rate when you speak to the dispatcher. A lot of companies will allow you to do this. Make sure the driver doesn't try to rip you off though...tell him you already have a negotiated price of (whatever) dollars. But don't lie, because they will check.
