The coolest clothes (and usually the most original) come from secondhand stores. You've got to make sure they aren't damaged/stained though, and that they are repairable as they are. But you'll find REAL retro styles, usually 70's but sometimes 40's-60's. It might take a lot of looking, but you will have a much lower chance of wearing the same dress as another girl at the formal. Even better? Get a pattern and have a seamstress make a dress for you (best if you know about the formal a few months in advance).

my favorite choice is Thrift Stores. they have cute, vintage, cocktail dresses that wow everyone. if you're looking for something more simple to look for...DEB is a really nice store for cute and formal cocktail dresses. if you're looking for brands Oleg Casini (look up the website) have cute and different but formal cocktail dresses. you might want to search on the website too for different things. Davids Bridal has a prom collection and there might be something there too. GOOD LUCK ON FINDING A DRESS! =]
