I have a vet appointment scheduled monday, but in the mean time what to do?

I know it isn't fleas, lice, other guinea pigs (hersheys can hold his own pretty well), and he isn't picking with the spot...
it may be mites but only a vet can be sure. slight dermatitis.

only experienced cavy owners please answer.

Had this problem recently, with our show-winning Abyssinian. The problem was the guinea pig scratching and biting its fur out, going into frenzies, even rolling on her back and scratching with several feet at once. Have you seen anything like this? Vet initially said mites, and provided insecticidal drops (and antibiotic jab in case of infected wounds), but they didn't cure it, we also tried anti-fungal cream, and a medicine taken by mouth for burrowing mites. didn't help. Then the vet provided a medicated shampoo called Malaseb (antibacterial and antifungal), we bathed her very thoroughly twice a week for a couple of weeks leaving the shampoo on for 10 mins each time as per instructions, and this produced a complete cure, she was back to normal within a few weeks, the fur re-grew very quickly. Unless your vet is particularly knowledgeable about guinea pigs, you may find the same try-it-and-see approach, which is costly in repeat visits, if the diagnosis on Monday isn't 100% certain I suggest you ask whether you can try various potential remedies in parallel.

I have experienced this with guinea pigs that I have rescued. If it is not mites, it could be from a vitamin c deficiency. If their only source of vitamin c is from the guinea pig pellets, sometimes the pellets lose their vitamin c with storage. I give mine a piece of melon, a quarter of an orange or a handful of dandelion greens every day in addition to their regular food.

I don't know if guinea pigs get it or not, but they may be hotspots...try some bynadryl cream or cortisone cream...he should be fine though...
