Using an evolutionary perpsective: Consider the DNA that defines an organism. At some point a proto-chicken - something that was almost a chicken but not quite - produced an egg with a mutation that become a chicken. Hence, the egg came first. In other words, from an evolutionary point of view, a complex organism won't spontaneously evolve into a new species. An egg is a single cell, so DNA mutations in the egg multiply throughout the adult organism. These changes are ususally gradual and occur over many generations - but, if you had to pick a single point where something that wasn't quite a chicken became a chicken, that point would start with the egg.

According to Aristotle, actualilty takes precedence over (comes first) potentiality. Eggs become chickens, chickens do not become eggs (they lay them, they don't become them). Therefore an egg is a chicken in potentiality, a chicken is a chicken in actuality. Therefore the chicken came first.

I don't know a scientific or religious answer, but I have noticed that no-one ever says, 'which came first, the egg or the chicken?'

The egg. They more than likely evolved over millions of years from terodactyl eggs or summat. Scientists apparently found fossils of feathers from a few million years ago, and think that baby dinosaurs had feathers for warmth

Scientifically: the egg. Dinosaurs laid eggs.
Religiously: the chicken. God created animals, and then they laid eggs.
Grammatically: the chicken. Ever looked in a dictionary?
Dodgily: the chicken. I'll let you work it out.

This is an age-old question. I would say chicken first. This is because God created Adam and Eve first, not sperms and eggs to be fertilised.
