Have a super hero costume party(all the blokes dress as the heros and the women dress as sexy damsels in distress).

I went to ibiza with me best mate cos his birthday is the day after mine so it worked out well cos we were both 40 on the same weekend bit pricey but worth every penny

Find a friend with a large yard (if you dont have one yourself). Build a contained bonfire or get one of those outdoor chineys. Then invite close friends, have some food and drinks, play some music, and then let it go from there. Have friends tell stories of the birthday boy or girl.

Go down to a pub which serves decent food with some close friends. End up getting nice and drunk, but not wasted, as you don't want a hangover tomorrow.

Spending it with friends/loved ones is the important bit though.

I am sure you & your partner could go abroad somwhere, I have found throwing a party is hard work so go away & enjoy a break
