I work for the local power company. Since electricity is needed day and night, I pretty much have to be available 24/7. When I joined as an apprentice, I was told that I would have to go to work whenever needed, day off or no. I have been called out several times on Sundays and public holidays, and every time I went to work without complaining. It is the ethos of our company, and we are proud of it.

I would show up for work. I actually had that happen once. About 5 years ago there was a SARS scare at the Air Force base where I lived. I called the hospital I was working at and asked them if they wanted me to come in, they told me yes. It turned out to be nothing but I was there just in case.
