SurferRose, do you not think that industrial Art often turns out better than fine Art?
If something awakens something in a person (Like a way of looking at things) then i think you could call it fine Art.

No. Advertising is a form of communication whilst art is a form of expression.

Good advertising has a purpose a direct message that has to reach the audience through the good use of visual elements. If the specific message does not reach the audience the piece does not work.

Fine art is not concerned about a message, it's main objective is the expression of emotions through the good use of visual elements. A good piece of art arise an emotional reaction from the audience, it doesn't matter what kind of emotional reaction and most of the times as viewers we cannot quite put our finger on it, what is important is the how strong that feeling is.

The difference between fine art and industrial does exist. Industrial artists (I'm one) create art for the purposes of selling a product. Period. This is something design and advertising students learn in college and art school.

Fine art exists for its own sake. It, too, commuicates but not for the purposes of selling product. The line seems to blur when beautiful, original art is commisioned for an ad, but the difference is actually easy to discern. The answer lies with context. The same piece of art can be industrial or fine art depending upon its purpose.

Beautiful photography, poignant messages, simplicity and elegance and even cultural statements can be found in advertising. Some advertising is very edgy and controversial too, just like fine art from the past. The first impressionist, the first cubist, the first photographers - they all shared that problem of people wondering if their works were art. I say absolutely, and thank goodness for people who create and keep us guessing.

No. Although some of my graphic designer friends are great artist (painters, sculptors etc.) Many others were good drawers and thats about it. They took the advertising route. It will never and should never be considered a fine art.
