with so many countries moving towards a socialist form government - what do you see happening for them in the near and distant future?

Although I like socialism in principle, I do not think Chavez and others are doing a good job representing the true tenets of socialism accurately. However, Castro, despite several rights violations, is an excellent socialist ruler for Cuba and has helped the country greatly.

You have to understand what feeds socialism in South America. Povery and Ignorance. There's a definite inverse correlation between literacy/education and sentiments towards socialism.
As a person that used to live in Venezuela, trust me, these governments are not doing anything good for the people who support them. Poverty and unemployment are worse in Venezuela after the reign of Chavez. I just don't understand how these ideologies will ever be succesful.

I am a pretty open mindend individual and only demerit Chavez because he promised a lot of things to the poor that he didn't deliver.

Corruption and rampant capitalism wasn't seen well in South America, so I truly don't know what direction South America should take.

Once again South America is slipping back into the statism that has led the continent -- which was settled before No. America, and has greater resources than No. America, into its historic economic & social backwardness.

Communism = Failure. U.S.S.R. China, Cuba didn't turn out well.
