A bruise is caused by red blood cells dying and it will heal on its own. You can try ice, nothing went wrong when you gave blood. It may have been the person who poked you or the gauge (size) of the needle was bigger than what was needed.

Rub vicks on it
My mom rubs vicks on my arms and legs when I get bruises! Now I do the same thing to my daughter it works great! ...
Every time I have blood work done, I rub vicks right away after I leave the doctor's office ...

Ice does wonders for swelling and bruising. Don't mess with it otherwise.
