Depends on the type of game you're looking for.
A silly-fun party game? Beyond Balderdash or Apples to Apples
A light game? Carcassonne, Transamerica
Medium weight? Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Alhambra, Ra
Lots of strategy? Puerto Rico, Power Grid, Caylus
You can look these games up at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/ to see what they're like.
If you want to buy one you can compare prices at various online game stores here: http://michaelareed.com/boardgamesearch/

It's not unique but PICTIONARY is great and you don't have to worry about not getting enough people to play. Everyone has fun and you can end it at any time. You can't quit in the middle of a chess/monopoly or even LIFE game. You can make your own words to draw too. That makes it a little interesting. You can have ALL guess or just the men guess etc. It's funny to look at how people draw something so differently. And how the obvious sometimes isn't. Also, you can play without a board and it's make your own rules and you have everything for it at your place - no need to BUY IT,

Trivial Pursuit!

There are so many versions and a large amount of people can play. There are even cards for young players. You could be playing with a genus board, but some players can have their questions asked from Baby boomers, pop culture, junior etc.

It's always fun, can be frustrating but you also learn from it. I really love it. I also like that it's a social game and takes a while to play.

Lately I've enjoyed Pop culture, all the pie questions are from the DVD.

enjoy!!!!

To play with casual gamers? Right now it's Wits and Wagers. Each person tries to answer a question where the answer is a number then you get to see all the answers and bet on which one you think is the right one. Most chips after 7 rounds wins. It may not sound all that fun at first but it actually winds up being a terrific and fun party- type game.

Settlers of Catan, It was the game of the year. German but Mayfair games markets it. It a great friend / family game. Tile based every game is different. You win by getting to 10 points. You do this by building towns and cities and other ways. There is also other expansion modules for it. 5/6 player version. Cities and Knights of Catan, Seafarers of Catan and others.

Pente
Its really fun. It has about 5 rules and it's not well known. Look it up on wikepedia. Some searches say it is a two player game. That is not true. I have played with 6. I would not recommend more than 6 though.
Seriously! try it out. Its good fun!!

Parcheesi is my fav - it's a great time with a lot of fun & opportunities to send other folks back to start. It's easy to understand the rules & a fairly simple game - unlike Monopoly with all the rules, etc. Also, Sorry is great for family/friends gatherings.

Power Grid

Why? Because it is pretty simple to learn how to play, but there are several different paths to how to win. Last game, all 5 players attempted different methods, and we had a close game and alot of fun.

I really like Cranium. It's a mix of pictionary, charades, name that tune...and other stuff. It's a blast to play, and we used to get together with some other couples on our block and play every weekend. I highly recommend it. It even got my boyfriend to mimic Michael Jackson, and that is a HUGE deal. It's really fun!

Puerto Rico hands too, this Andreas Seyfarth classic has so many subtle strategies and different paths of victory, I just love it! Caylus is a very close second.
