New Application for a U.S. Passport
To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of 7,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States with two photographs of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver’s license.
Acceptance facilities include many Federal, state and probate courts, post offices, some public libraries and a number of county and municipal offices. There are also 13 regional passport agencies, and 1 Gateway City Agency, which serve customers who are traveling within 2 weeks (14 days), or who need foreign visas for travel. Appointments are required in such cases.
You’ll need to apply in person if you are applying for a U.S. passport for the first time: if your expired U.S. passport is not in your possession; if your previous U.S. passport has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago; if your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were under age 16; or if your currently valid U.S. passport has been lost or stolen.

Just go to the Post office with your Birth certificate and the old passport. They will take your picture $15/-. New passport costs around $100/-. I don't know about renewing. But do it fast 'coz they're gonna increase charges next year. You can apply online too. Chek here: http://www.usps.com/passport/welcome.htm?from=bannerall&page=passports
Good Luck!

In Canada you can get a passport application package from any post-office which answers all the questions you asked. If US post-offices don't carry passport applications (I don't know whether they actually do or not) they might know where you go to get one. If you're close to Trenton, you could try the government office building (I realise that's the state capitol, but it probably has some local offices of some federal departments.) You might also check the governmental pages in your phone-book.

in the UK you need I.D eg a birth certificate, marriage certificate. You have to fill in a very long form from the post office (mail place) and have to have some one who has known you for more than 2 years [I think] to verify it is you eg a teacher, solicitor etc.You have to send back your old passport and they cut a corner off it so u don't use it again. It cost £42.00 if you are over 16 but is free if you are under. It takes about 4 weeks to come back.but remember that's in the UK it could be different where your from!

You can take your expired passport to get it renewed. You will need new photos.
Every county has a passport office - usually the county clerk. I live in Middlesex County and the office is downtown New Brunswick. You can get the address in the phone book or online:
