Last year I downgraded from a 2002 Honda Odyssey to a 2006 Scion XB - the best change I ever made. I doubled my gas mileage, and I drive about 80 miles round trip to work!
The entire back seat still folds down, so I can get nearly as much in there as I used to in the van. My kiddo likes the fact that she actually can roll down her windows (all the way, not just half down). I only have one kid, grade school age, but carry up to 3 kiddos in the back seat with absolutely no problems...
The only issues I've had with my car have been 100% covered by warranty - a squeak in my steering (they replaced the entire steering column), and a weird little thing with my radio (they replaced the radio).
Good luck with your choices...

The Scion is fine, and the Matrix as well. Avoid the Caliber. Reviews have not been good. Poorly designed and will not hold its value as long as the others. Also consider the new Mazda 5. It's better than either of the Toyotas in my opinion.
Good Luck

I would explore the option of going for a hybrid suv that can save costs on fuel. I dont believe they have hybrid vans yet. The reason you may still need to have larger vehicle is you mentioned your kids. With kids around there are a lot of trips that will be enjoyable with that lil extra space

I have a Chevy Equinox. We LOVE this vehicle. It looks almost identical to the BMW SUV but with out the price. It gets pretty good gas mileage and is very roomy. I call it a wagon, SUV, mini van hybrid because it has exterior features like them all. They run in the low $20,000 and it's one of the cheapest SUV's to insure.

Forget the Dodge. Either of the other two will do fine.
However, with the ages of your boys don't forget that they will soon be outgrowing the back seat of most small cars. "Test Drive" the back seat of anything you're considering to make sure that they'll be reasonably comfortable as they grow.

I have a Honda CRV-EX. Has nice room, good storage, all wheel drive ( if you need it where you live) and it gets good fuel mileage. The Toyota RAV is also good. The vehicles you mentioned are good. I guess it comes down to personal choice and price!

Your kids are not in car seats anymore. Get something for you not them. They will appreciate their mom driving a cool car.
