My boss recently had a loss in her family and I would like to know what should I do or say when she gets back to work. I did not attend her mothers funeral because I had just started my job 2 weeks ago and did not really work with her. So should I buy her a card or something. Oh yes and I am wanting to get a job that is opening up in her department...help

Definately buy a card, but usually in an office environment the whole department signs it, leave it on her desk or give it to her personally, but express verbally that you are sorry for her loss, and if there is anything you can do to help, and then leave it at that. If you sign only your name then it might look like you are taking advantage of the situation to get brownie points for the position in her department. It shows your compassion, but don't pry for any details unless she approaches you with them.

A card would be a very nice gesture.
I am sure that she would appreciate the thought.
I would wait a few days after she gets back about asking for a different position.

Yes you should buy her a sympathy card or some type of card to let her know that you are sorry for her lost.

Simply convey your deepest condolences on her loss. Do not make a pitch for the new job after consoling her. Wait a few days.

Card and if you can swing it flowers and tell her that if there is anything that you can do to make things easier for her during this time you'd be glad to do it...hopefully she'll say no but make note that you offered, 2 points for you!

a very understated card. If you have only been there 2 weeks, you probably don't have a good handle on what kind of person she is, especially how she handles grief. Watch your co-workers and take your cues from their actions and her reactions.

Leave a small flower arrangement and card on her desk. Keep it small or you'll seem insincere.
