units are specific measures of time that you are enrolled in a subject.

1 year of english would be 1 unit, 3 years would be 3 units
Most High Schools have a minimum number of units for various subjects (ie you must have 2 units of math, 4 units of english, 2 units of science, etc before you graduate)
