Balony, don't listen to anyone who says you just need to learn to live with it, I had it really bad for twenty years, until I heard about colonics. Within a year I concidered myself completely healed. I believe in colonics so much ( always say I believe it saved my life ) that I became a colon hydrotherapist myself. There are other things you need to adress of course, mostly the emotional issues, also castor oil packs work amazing. If you are interested in any of this let me know, I will explain what it all is.
But KNOW that you can get better, and PLEASSSSSE don't take medication, it is a easy temporary fix that covers the problem but doesn't solve the issue, and usually has a bunch of side effects.
Good luck

You can't get rid of IBS. I've had it for around 10 yrs now. You have to make a list of what foods you have eaten when it plays up, then eliminate them 1 by 1. Mine flares up if I have wheat, rice, corn, nuts, seeds, peppers, citrus fruits, artificial sweeteners etc... People suffer from different foods, some are ok with wheat, and some aren't. Just work out what causes you the most pain. You can get anti-spasmodic tablets to ease it. I take Mebeverine and they work really well.
The scan is a doddle, it doesn't hurt. They'll be checking to see if you have any infections or kinks in the intestines that may be the cause.
You can get on with your life, did you know that the sexy model Tyra Banks has IBS? she hasn't let it stop her. I bet she always knows where the loo is though!
Hope you get something sorted soon. :-)

IBS is not "got rid of", it is lived with. You alter your diet, get enough fiber, drink enough fluid and avoid foods that cause symptoms. A pelvic ultrasound? for what? IBS is neither treated nor diagnosed with an ultrasound, one has to have a colonoscopy and an endoscopy and a barium swallow to properly diagnose IBS. Is the doctor trying to identify some other issue? Not sure what you are afraid of, ultrasounds don't hurt.

the first thing u need to do is to realise that ibs(irritable bowel syndrome)is an inconvinient and occasionally embarrassing condition, but it really is not a serious illness.
the next thing to do is to keep a close watch on the things u eat and drink.keep an acurate journal of ur diet for a few weeks-what u ate and drank for evry meal, and evry in between meal snack.so, keep a private journal of ur bowel movements during that same few weeks.try to figure out wether there r any foods or drinks that seem to b triggering ur episodes of irritable bowel syndrome.drinks like fruit juices, coffee and wine seem to bother some people.and many people try to avoid fatty drinks, fried foods, and spices.figure out what u need to cut out of ur diet to help settle ur intestines.
now add some more fiber to ur diet.eating more fiber will improve ur bowel habits(especially constipation) and help relieve some of the symptoms of the IBS.u can add bran cereals, oat bran, and high fiber vegitables to ur diet to increase the amount of fiber u eat each day.
if u r having an embarassing problem with flatulence, the key is to avoid the foods that cause the flatulence.listed below r some examples of foods that r big offenders, moderate offenders, or relatively safe :
big offenders (excessive gas)
dairy products
beans
celery
bananas
wheat germ
onions
carrots
raisins
pretzels
moderate offenders (moderate gas)
breads
apples
citrus fruits(oranges,lemons,grape fruit)
potatoes
[astries
relatively safe (low gas)
meat(beaf,chicken,turkey,and fish)
eggs
rice
lettuce
broccoli
nuts
cauliflower
cucumbers
potato chips
a final way to help reduce ur episodes of irritable bowel syndrome is to lower ur stress with daily excercise.occasionally, stress can affect ur bowel habits.
regular daily excercise helps reduce stress and keeps ur body healthy.

The others have given you good answers, however I will say there is one situation where I know you can get rid of IBS - if you use hormonal birth control, in particular the likes of Yasmin, stop taking it. IBS can be a side effect of some hormonal birth control, I had IBS-D when I was on Yasmin, pretty much as soon as I came off the pill my IBS vanished.

You need to treat the cause and not just the symptoms. I recommend Optiflora.
This two-product system uses new technology to protect beneficial microflora during the rigors of shipping, storage, and the acidic journey through your stomach. Other products claim live microflora at the time of manufacture. Optiflora guarantees the delivery of live microflora (500 million) to your intestines. This is a patented process.
This two-product system includes Probiotic (Bifidus & Acidophilus...microflora) + Prebiotic (FOS...food source for microflora).
My daughter-in-law had very bad ulcerative colitis and she started feeling much better in a very short period of time. Her doctor was amazed - the actual healing process was taking place.
Hope this is useful and feel free to contact me with questions.
Best Wishes

A pelvic unltrasound is not more uncomfortable than a smear, just lay back and look at the ceiling! its a case of managing IBS, trying to find out what your 'triggers' are and eliminating them. There are lots of websites dealing with this, just put in the name into a search engine

I had it for years. The first thing to do is to eat plenty of bran foods e.g. bananas. wholemeal bread. green beans weetabix, also nuts and pulses. drink plenty of fresh fruit juice. and the best tip of all is do some exercise and learn to relax and be less tense. If none of this woks, get your DR. to prescribe some amytripolene which relaxes your insides, and you as well. Ill be surprised if your scan shows anything, I had every scan in the book and the pain I had was tremendous.. self inflicted by stress and worry, Hope this helps you.
