You need a wireless router, an ISP account, and a phone line or cable installed.

First, you need to have broadband access to your "spot". Then, run out and buy yourself a wireless router. Wireless G or N preferred. Depending whether your broadband connection is DSL or cable, there are different configurations on how to make your "hotspot" work.

Essentially you just connect your broadband router to your wireless router, and there ya go! It should work.

To connect to the network, you can make it easy or hard. You can leave it as an unsecured wireless network where anyone within the radius of your router can access the Internet. Or you can restrict the access to just people you know by using the WEP (Wired Equivalent Protection) encryption feature all routers have. You enter a keyword and it will automatically turn it into a series of numbers and letters that EVERYONE will have to know to get on your network.

Its a little tedious sometimes, but networking has become fairly easy these days.

Buy a Lynxsys - Cisco Router
Plug either a DSL or Cable ethernet output into this box.
Your PC will pick up the wireless signal if it is less that 2 years old. If it isn't you need to buy a receiver either in the form of a plugin PCMCIA card for a laptop or a PC card.
Both made by Lynxsys.

Cost of the transmitter is about $50 (less on sale). Receiver is about $30.

Good place to buy the stuff is Best Buy. They have tech advice and have a 30 day return policy.

Lynxsys makes this very very easy to do

You buy a wireless router and plug that into your modem or buy a WIreless network card for a Computer that is connected to the internet and enable ICS on it. (internet connection sharing)
