The house was abandoned and there is signifigant water damage to the floors that make it impossible to refinish the floors. The amount of cupping is so bad a floor refinisher we had out to look at the floors said he would just replace it completely. That isn't in our budget right now, so we are considering painting the floor until we can afford to replace it. Any ideas on how to do it? Thanks for your help! :-)

You will still want to sand the floors and use a good primer, it will make your paint last longer.

As for the kind of primer and paint to use, you will want killz to cover any water damaged areas, otherwise it will come up through the paint.

Then use Glidden floor paint. Available at Home Depot at a good price.

First you need to sand it with a sander that you can rent in Home Depot and you need to find the color that you want. You can live it with no color to save more money and have it natural color of the wood, after that you need to varnish it. Let it dry a day before putting the clear varnish.
I did it and it looks nice.

painting wood is always tacky, I recommend go to lowes and buy a cheap grade carpet or if you cant afford that get some rugs.
