This is going to sound crazy, but the same thing happened to my last car's speedometer. When I took it to be repaired, I was quoted a ridiculous price (the car was getting older). A mechanic took me aside and advised me to hit the dashboard directly above the speedometer to "jar" it out of being stuck. This didn't fix the problem, but I could still get the speedometer to work. I never did get it fixed correctly, but used the mechanic's "fix" and had the car for four more years.

If all the gauges are dead, then you more than likely have a dead fuse. If you replace the fuse and it works then immediately stops working again, you have a ground problem or an over-exertion on the system causing the cicuit to draw more power to work than the fuse can handle. Look at the AC clutch, possibly fan clutch.

If it's just the speedo, sensors could be dead, the cluster could be dead, really need to test more.

I'd find a mechanic-inclined friend and get some preliminary diagnosis before you go back to a mechanic. $90/hour for them to tell you 'I don't know' is a bit steep.

The speedometer itself is usually a sealed unit. If the fault is there it will have to be replaced.

More likely, you may have to replace a cable. This brings information regarding the rotation of one of the tyres to the meter. Even just greasing it may solve the problem.

Well, visit another car hospital to fix it!
If you don't know how fast you are going, you might run faster, thus pay more than than fixing the speedometer!

maximum highways have mile markers, you may time how long it take to bypass via them, if it takes a million minute then your doing 60 MPH. Or in case you be conscious of your kit ratios and tire length you need to use the tachometer. in case you have a three.08 very final force and 26" tall tires then in case you're turning 2800 RPM then you certainly are doing 70 mph.
