Make him something with you own hands, using your wit and skills and imagination. Buying things for special occasions (and we all do it) is pretty hollow I think. Time is what counts. Why not join a pottery class, and make him a cup?

I can not knit or sew for the life of me...but I came across a blanket you can make without sewing. Here is what you do

Take two pieces of fleece fabric 1 yard in length each. It looks the cutest to have one piece be a pattern and the other a solid color.

Lay them on top of each other on the floor

Cut a 2" by 2" square out of each corner

now starting at one of the squares measure 2" from it and make a slit that goes about 2" long.

from that slit measure another 2" make another cut...do this around the whole blanket.

Once you have the whole blanket cut just tie the strips of fabric together with the one below it

The whole blanket takes about an hour to make. If you make one for an adult you would use 2 yards of fabric. They turn out really cute and most fabric stores have the pattern for this blanket if you need to look at pictures to understand what I am saying :)

*if you make this blanket for a baby, The baby should be watched really carefully once he hits chewing stage since they could chew thru the tassles

* and because I am a mom I feel the urge to mention a baby should not have a blanket in the crib until a year old because of SIDS

you could find the best baby blanket ever and then, hopefully, that blanket will become HIS blankie.
get mom on board too, b/c the more she give him that blanket the more attached he will become to it!

OR you could document her pregnancy, birth, first years by scrapbooking everything. this way mom doesn't have to do it since she will be busy with the baby!

you could write him little letters like "i talked to your mom today and boy are you making her tired! she can't eat fish b/c apparently you don't like it and her tummy looks like a bunch of tennis balls are rolling around in there b/c you keep moving sooo much!!"
also, take pics of her growing tummy, like every month.

OR you could get those kits for his hand prints and foot prints.

it's hard to find a baby gift that can be sentimental for years.

another idea....i do this for my neices...
i buy them each a savings bond for christmas. it's not that special to them now, however, when they get older and want to buy a car or help pay for college, well, cashing those babies in will help alot!!

i hope this at least gave you some ideas...

take care.!

a teddy bear will eventually fall apart, a blanket will eventully wear and other little traditional gifts that will bore a child win it gets older. try a plaque written by you dedicating your love and devotion to your best mate and the child that was born whom you who has been chosen as the auntie/godmother/nanny and write more in it from your heart, then have it professionaly framed. have it all ready to go until the baby is born then fill in the date, put it n the frame and give it to your best mate when its born. hang it in the babys room and get the RESPECT.

Get a mold mixture and when he is born and comes home from the hospital mix the mold mixture and place his little hand on it and you do your hand right beside it and put your names on the mold and when he grows up he will see the first thing he did when he came home as a newborn with his auntie right beside him.

I completely agree with the savings bond. Maybe a teddy bear and soft cuddly blanket too.

If you live nearby and will see him frequently, and even babysit, chronicle his first year with a scrapbook. Lots of pictures, and stories about that year. First smile, first laugh, first time to roll over.
Those things you are there for, snap a picture. What you miss, get the details from mom or dad and write it down.
Of course, mom may not want to give it to him when he's older!

I'd suggest either a nice, soft, unique blanket or stuffed animal. The baby will find it immediately appealing and it will continue to offer the comfort children crave throughout their childhoods.

Good Luck and Congratulations!

A baby scrapbook would be nice. That way you and the baby can enjoy pics. and celebrated events he encounters as he's growing up. A special touch would be to create the scapbook yorself. Include a picture of yourself and a letter that he can enjoy later on.
