Shopping is like any other addiction. If you are doing it for some emotional high and not just for any actual need. If it is emotional, then you have to first admit you have a problem which you seem to and then commit to changing. First off, cut up the credit cards, if you can get direct deposit so that you aren't tempted to cash you paycheck and spend it I would. Then put your bills on autopay which can go along way to keeping your bills current. Then budget the rest for savings and "entertainment" purposes and don't exceed those amounts.

I would also avoid the stores that trigger your emotions. If you can't cut up the cards then just don't carry them with you.

The other alternative is to increase your income. Get a second job, start a business etc.

I have the same problem. I love buying things for my kids, not usually myself. I also convinced myself its good to buy things on sale. However I mean I really stock up, so I spend a fortune anyhow. I guess all I can say is, after all your necessities are paid take half of whats left and put it in a separate account. Only use the half you are left with. Do this every month. Also eating at home is alot cheaper than eating out. So try to keep that to a minimum, maybe for special occasions only.

Make yourself a budget. Set a credit limit or something. Set aside a certain amount that you will be allowed to spend in specific areas: food, clothes&accessories, etc, and don't forget to include a percentage that you save.

Crown Ministries has a very helpful program that you can go through usually with people in your neighborhood. My spouse and I went through the how to manage your money program and it really helped. It provided a clear vision with implementable reasonable steps and goals, and gave us clear tools and practice using them in order to manage the money well.
